Our History
Fenton Memorials was founded in 1882. Carl L. Butts and his wife Mary Burton-Butts purchased the business in 1946 from the Stone family. Carl was an accomplished Victorian sculptor who had spent many years traveling the country hand carving his artworks into the architecture of many buildings. These elaborate artworks included lions, Acanthus leaves, Corinthian columns, and gargoyle motifs. He brought his love for the art into the memorial company where he taught his wife some of the finer techniques. Carl Butts grew ill and died a short three years later and Mary turned to their son Bobby Butts for help with the business in 1949. Bobby took over ownership of the company in 1963 after his mother retired. He continued hand carving each stone until the early sixties when sandblasting became the more predominant means of carving. He and his wife Charlene raised seven children, all of whom spent time working in the company. Their daughter Julie excelled in the art designing and their daughter Barb still works within the company managing many of the details behind the scenes. Bobby continues to manage the business with the help of his two sons, Michael and Matthew.
The family expanded into the production of vaults in the 1960’s, providing quality service and products to cemeteries and funeral directors in southeastern Michigan. Fenton Vaults is currently selling products nationwide. The most popular of which is a nine crypt temporary mausoleum used in many cemeteries to provide spaces while a bigger community mausoleum is being built. The popularity of this little building has the company excited about adjusting the model to a permanent unit. The vault company is presently expanding into Fenton Pre-cast Concrete. Providing local contractors, homeowners and business owners with a new line of products such as: pre-cast concrete stairs, landscaping blocks, foundations, concrete pads and pre-cast wall panels.
For more than 125 years Fenton Memorials has continued to service the memorial needs of Michigan families.
